2021 - Nature
Creativity is spiritual. It's not a new idea, but I'm not sure everyone feels the same way. When I paint, I'm aware of the energy that flows through me which is why I think I enjoy painting natural subjects the most. There's an organic flow to the creative process and it feels right to produce images of the natural world. I look to artists like Howard Hodgkin, Vincent van Gogh and Jan De Vliegher for their use of paint and color. I reference Nihonga style painting from Japan and its nature-first philosophy. I encapsulate the above influences within a Mondrian-inspired framework. The end result is a balanced, yet voluptuous movement of color that feels alive and otherworldly.
